Cardiovascular disease is actually quite easy to prevent. Eating a diet low in saturated fats, cholesterol, sodium, and processed foods will greatly decrease your risk. Cholesterol is found in animal products and is easily absorbed into the body. Once it is there it is hard to get rid of. Elevated cholesterol levels can cause plaque deposits in the arteries, which can build up and eventually cause heart attacks.
Eating high fiber foods is another way to prevent cardiovascular disease since fiber binds cholesterol to fats to limit the absorption. High fiber foods also decrease high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels. Another preventative measure is to eat lots of fruits and vegetables because their higher water content cleanses the blood. In addition, they aid detoxification and lower fats. By consuming saturated fat (found in animal products) and trans fats (found in some commercially baked cookies and crackers) puts you at a higher risk of high cholesterol.
