vol 101 issue 31

Add some oats to your cereal bowl. Commercial granolas can be loaded with sugar and saturated fat. Make your own- all you need is a bowl, a few ingredients and an oven. This is a basic recipe, feel free to add any ingredients you like: coconut, nuts, dried fruit. Oatmeal contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber slows down the digestion of starch and may reduce LDL cholesterol without lowering HDL cholesterol. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is considered to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Oats also contain phytochemicals that have cancer-fighting properties. Wow, all of those benefits at breakfast? Yum!

Granola Recipe Ingredients:

4 cups oats

1/2 cup honey/ maple syrup/ or brown rice syrup

1/2 cup chopped toasted nuts

1 cup toasted wheat germ

1/2 cup raisins

Granola Recipe Directions: Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Toast oats in oven, stirring often, until golden. Stir in other ingredients and allow to cool.
