Student wins free housing during men’s basketball game

On Jan. 30, 2016, supporters filled the Alex G. Spanos Center to see the Pacific Tigers face off against the WCC’s top team, Saint Mary’s College. Nothing, however, beat out the student section appearance, with many hopeful for a chance to win free housing.
This year, Residential Life & Housing brought a crazy prize to the table: free student housing for the upcoming year, with the maximum possible value of $9,500. Besides the intense basketball game, this coveted prize drew in stands of students.
After the first quarter, tons of stress balls were thrown into the student section. Later, they announced there were six signed balls given out, and whoever had one became one of the six possible winners.
The final contest was styled after the popular game show “The Price Is Right”; during half time, the six contestants were invited to spin a wheel twice, and the individual whose combined spins summed nearest to 100 would win.
Jiwoo Lee, a freshman from Southern California, held the winning standard at 70, until Nick Meckfessel, the last contestant, took the wheel. His first spin landed on 0, leaving him a 3/12 chance to beat Jiwoo’s number. His second spin left the crowd roaring: 100. By almost a miracle, Nick Meckfessel, a Stockton resident, won himself free on-campus housing.
Though Pacific fought hard against St. Mary’s, the Tigers came in short three points, with a final score of 65-68. Despite Pacific’s loss, Meckfessel was still a winner. After his overwhelming victory, he “honestly could not believe it, even in the slightest bit.” His parents thought that Nick “used up a life-time’s worth of luck in a single swoop!”
Jiwoo, on the other hand, playfully upset, repeatedly told friends, “I was one click away — one click!” Nonetheless, Meckfessel is thankful for this opportunity provided by Pacific. As part of the lacrosse team, he would like to take this opportunity to shout out @pac.lax on Instagram.
