Miguel Diaz ‘17 (above), who took the Aztec Invitational tournament title in San Diego last weekend, continued his strong play over the weekend.
This past weekend both the men’s and women’s teams went back out into play across Northern California.
The women’s team headed to the Saint Mary’s Invitational, where they had a strong showing and improved on last week’s record. All six Tigers picked up wins, indlucing both tiger freshmen, Francis Dean and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz. Other highlights included Christiana Ferrari ‘16 and Regina Suarez ‘15 advancing though their draws into the last day. Iveata Masarova ‘15 made a run trough the consolation tournament, making an appearance in the semifinals of her bracket.
The standout for the Tigers was Hana Ritterova ‘15 making in to the semifinals of the main draw after knocking off Stanford’s Lindsey Kostas. However, she fell just short in the semifinals to San Francisco’s Thrya Taune.
The men’s team participated in the prestigious Battle of the Bay Invitational in San Francisco. Miguel Diaz ‘17 and Sem Verbeek ‘16 both competed in singles and doubles. Diaz opened up play with a 6-0, 5-7, 7-5 victory over Andrew Raphaelson of San Diego but later fell to the No. 3 seed John Lamble of Santa Clara. Verbeek made a run into the quarterfinals, beating Garret Patton from Boise State along the way.
In doubles the young duo made a run into the semifinals after knocking the No. 3 seed from Cal. Their streak ended in the semifinals when they fell to the duo from San Francisco.
Both teams will be heading back out to battle in the ITA Northwest Regionals this weekend. The men will head to Saint Mary’s and the women will go to Stanford. Be sure to follow the live updates on Twitter @PacificMtennis and @PacificWtennis.
